Univ. Bremen Dr. V. Perlick | Gravitational Lensing (S3, elective, 6 ECTS) |
Learning Outcomes: | |
Knowledge and Understanding: | |
Applying Knowledge and Understanding: | Participants understand the basic principles of light propagation in General Relativity and of all the corresponding effects of light lensing. |
Prerequisites | Basic courses in Physics on mechanics, Introduction to General Relativity. |
Program | The lecture is addressed to listeners, who have basic knowledge in General Relativity. According to this theory, light rays propagate along the light-like geodesists of the given space-time metrics. The confirmation of the resulting predictions by observation is one of the most important tests of general relativity: these observations range from the deflection of light from the Sun, first observed in 1919, to the shadow of a Black Hole, the observation of which was first reported in April 2019. In this lecture all effects observed so far (e. g. multiple images, image distortion and the influence on image brightness) and their theoretical principles are discussed in detail. |
